Management Networking Breakfast - CEO Confessions

“If I knew then what I know now…”

On July 19th, we are privileged to have outstanding entrepreneurs discuss the real life lessons they have learned while serving as CEOs for start-up companies.  Their hard-earned wisdom could provide important insights for current or prospective entrepreneurs.
Joining us for this entertaining topic are three experienced CEOs/board members/investors who have had widely varying experiences in starting and running businesses both locally and internationally.  Wing Lam, founder of Wahoo’s Fish Tacos; Lance Stuart, with numerous start-ups here and abroad, and Paul Thiel, founder of publishing companies and director to technology start-ups, will all share their collective wisdom.

Wing Lam

After graduating from San Diego State University, Wing Lam joined forces with his brothers Ed and Mingo and together they combined their love of surf and food to create Wahoo’s Fish Taco.  This unique restaurant chain, headquartered in Costa Mesa, has an eclectic Mexican/Brazilian/Asian menu and a Hawaiian north-shore vibe.  Today, Wahoo’s spans over three states and 50 locations, with a dedicated and growing fan base.

Nicknamed the “Coolest CEO on the Planet,” Wing has earned the respect and won the hearts of many with his steadfast commitment to building a business based on personal priorities. Lam, whose fashion signature is still shorts, flip flops and Hawaiian shirts, is living proof that starting your own business can be the adventure of a lifetime.

Lance Stuart

Lance Stuart has 25 years of experience building businesses from the ground up, across many industries and geographies, although principally in Asia and the U.S. For over 20 years, he has been a General Partner of Zitan Partners, a boutique management consulting and investment firm. Zitan's consulting clients have included The Monitor Company, StrataCom (sold to Cisco), several large scale projects for AT&T as well as a variety of early-stage businesses. Zitan joint-ventured with Shanghai Bell (an Alcatel JV that is China’s largest central office switching manufacturer) and the Guangdong Provincial telephone authority to form China's largest power supply manufacturer for municipal telephone networks. Zitan also founded FastXchange, created by commercializing technology developed by a research institute for DARPA. FastXchange is an eProcurement company serving mostly defense industry clients, including Raytheon.
In addition, Lance has been the co-founder and CEO or COO of several companies, including WellspringELITE, a nutritional supplements business; Thinkfit, a fitness products company, LandRoller, an award-winning roller skate business; and WorkWell Systems, a venture-backed business that is a leader in work-injury prevention and return-to-work. WorkWell also operated the nation’s 2nd largest network of (over 1,200) independent physical therapy clinics and acquired BMS Medical Management, a 14-year old billings & collections business that experienced a 15-fold increase in revenues in the first 3 years after acquisition to become, by far, the largest firm in its industry.  Lance also served as Co-President and Co-Chief Operating Officer of Covenant Care, a start-up nursing home chain that grew profitably to more than 5,000 employees and $170 million in revenues during its first 30 months of operation.  He was one of two co-founders of Bó Lè Associates (headquartered in Hong Kong), a leading executive recruiting firm with 12 offices across Asia.  Lance also founded SATT (headquartered in Tokyo), which he led to become Asia's largest educational software company.  Over the past 15 years, Lance has raised well over $100 million for his ventures.

Paul Thiel

Paul Thiel is an experienced Fortune 500 executive, entrepreneur and director in the media, communications and information services businesses. A 1986 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Thiel started his career as a journalist covering insurance, health care and technology for the Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville. After writing for publications as diverse as The Washington Post, Business Week, Florida Trend and American Banker, Thiel was awarded a full merit scholarship to the Darden School at the University of Virginia, from which he earned an MBA in 1993 and founded the Darden Invitational, a national softball tournament for MBAs that was sponsored by T. Rowe Price and Louisville Slugger.  After graduating, he started several businesses for the Detroit News & Free Press, later moving to Orange County as an executive with Freedom Communications. Thiel founded and ran Freedom Interactive OC Inc., which he built to 65 employees and annualized revenue of $20 million, and served as a director and consultant to three technology start-ups. Thiel later served as CEO for a portfolio company of San Diego's Mission Ventures, TruCost, and started a magazine and media company serving the Inland Empire. Thiel is now on the board of TexTango, a social media company, and is a marketing and business development executive for BNY Mellon.
