Join us for a Lecture on "The Gulf of California and Steinbeck" |
HBSAOC, The Orange County Stanford Association and the Stanford Professional Women of Orange County cordially invite you to a special afternoon with Professors William Gilly and Professor Susan Shilinglaw
At The Ocean Institute , 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive Dana Point, CA
In 1940 John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts carried out an expedition to the Sea of Cortez where they collected intertidal creatures along the little explored coastline. Professor William Gilly presents an overview of that trip and compares it to the retracing he directed in 2004 with the goal of documenting changes in this storied body of water. One of the more startling changes is the current abundance of Humboldt squid, the subject of his current research efforts. Professor Gilly discusses Humboldt squid ecology in the Gulf of California and relates it to changing oceanic conditions that may be affecting their recent invasions of Pacific coastal waters from California to Alaska. Professor Shillinglaw will examine the relationship between John Steinbeck and the area he loved and featured so prominently in his works. During the 1930s and 40s, Ed Rickett's Biological Supply Laboratory on Cannery Row was a mecca for artists and writers and scientists, and she will draw connections between the real and fictional Cannery Row.
